After slowly creeping out of bed, ten after six we all silently went down stairs and got things ready for day number four.We loaded up in the suburbans and headed into Idyllwild before venturing to Thomas Mountain to begin our day of road side botanizing. On the way to our starting points, we separated and headed to each team's location. The orange team
went to an entrance on one side of the mountain and the blue team... THATS US! Headed up the mountain in the opposite direction. While driving up the mountain side road, Hawkeye (Colyer) spotted some honeysuckle and other really cool plants that we would have otherwise missed. As we got out of the SUV the flies and red ants began to surround us. We bagged and labeled the plants as quickly as possible, but it wasn't quick enough, sadly Katie was viciously attack by the man eating monsters. We dove into the vehicle and gave five yeps before we could continue our adventure...Rusty
didn't start driving until we all were buckled in. As we were driving we came across more and more plants to bag and press. Some of the plants we collected included,Indian paintbrush, poppy, milkweed, lotus, penstamon of three different colors, and alot of others. After two or more hours of driving, bagging, and pressing we met up with the orange team, where we discussed our findings (we collected almost 60 different types of plants altogether!)
While having a short lunch/press break both teams got ready to make the long way down the mountain. Although the plan was to
initially go down together we soon parted ways and the blue team stayed behind to collect a plant that neither of us had spotted. As the Orange team made their way home, the Blue team went on an adventure. After a very long drive, we made it to Palm Desert, a very...interesting city, to gas up and grab some batteries. We were all surprised, when we learned that the temperature was 115! We could feel ourselves melting as we made it from the car to the store and on our way back up the mountains. On our way back to the James Reserve we had to stop in Idyllwild to grab our dinner.
As soon as we brought our equipment in to the cabin we filled our plate and stuffed our faces. After dinner both teams downloaded their pictures, went over their recordings, and repressed all of the specimens for proper drying. When all our work was done we got washed up and wondered what was in store for tomorrow . Over all today was a very productive and adventurous day :)
